Bird Watching Tour
Bird are one of the most populous life forms on the planet, and this biodiversity leads to a richness of life and beauty. They incredible numbers of bird species demonstrate amazing evolutionary adaptations, and by learning how birds are able to adapt throughout out the world we can being adapt our own behaviours live in our world , rather then to force our world into an artificial and unsustainable mold.
One of the simplest pleasure we get from Bird and wildlife conservation is a genuine appreciation for our natural world. Observing and conserving birds can teach more then the details of individual bird species. By observing birds in flight aeronautical engineers can design more efficient airplanes.
The Eastern Himalaya and foot hills National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise with its rich biodiversity reflected in its wonderful avifauna comprising hornbill, Kingfishers, woodpeckers, pigeons, raptors, orioles, mynas, bulbuls, sunbirds and our National Birds Peacock. Birds resident and migratory , occurring from the foot hills to the grass land. Many species are resident in the other part of the globe which migrate in the winter to the lower Himalaya.
Non-birders may question why bird conservation is important and what difference it makes to the world at large. Bird watchers know however, that bird and wild life conservation is critical to the richness and diversity of the planet we share with more then 10000 species of birds. Understanding bird conservation means understanding ecology.
Birders should keep an appropriate distance from all species they observe. Stay on marked trails and avoid entering restricted areas, no matter how tempting it may be to venture closer to a bird. Disturbing a bird’s feeding area that may drive the bird away, not only out of range of the bird’s observations but permanently forcing the bird to find a safer, less disturbed habitat where it will not be able to be observed.
There are many useful tools that can bring birders close to the species they observe with out interacting with the birds. Zoom Camera lenses, binoculars and spotting scopes are useful options, and many times patience and it may venture closer on its own.
When visiting popular birding locations, share the best views with other birders and avoid any behaviour that may disrupt birds or distract other birders. Keep conservation to a minimum, turn off cell phone and avoid using flash photography that may disturb birds or birders’ viewing devices.

Tea Tourism
So what does tea tourism mean? Imagine you are spending a few days in a sprawling tea garden. You will stay in a Bungalow that was typically the residence of a British tea planter built during the old colonial time. The bungalow retains the antique furnishing & aura of the colonial days, and setup amidst lush garden setting within the estate. Food served is made of fresh organic produce from the backyard garden.
a relatively new concept in the world is Tea Tourism. Darjeeling is after all the Mecca of tea and sprawling estates producing what we know as the "Champagne of Teas" to the delight of the world. There are 80 odd operational tea gardens in Darjeeling that span across thousands of acres of land area on open hill slopes. High on the hills with cool breeze and misty weather planters and workers come together to form a wonderland where tea grows in the finest form like no where else in the world.
You wake up and sip a cup of finest flavoured tea that was harvested from the gardens the previous day, a brand that has made a great name for itself in the world. You take a stroll through the garden, talk to the garden workers and see how they deftly pluck the two leaves with a bud, and learn about their lives. You are also invited to take a look and learn about the tea processing in the factories where some of the best teas in the world are withered, rolled, dried, sorted and packaged.
However except in few cases, tea tourism is not yet meant for the budget travellers. The luxury and special intimate experience in the gardens don't come cheap. Having said that, there are some gardens where tea tourism is affordable for the mid-budget travellers as well and the experience is no less in any respect.
And in some others like Makaibari Tea Estate, the garden workers and villagers have extended their houses to make home stays for tourists on low budget and offer them home made food and a nice glimpse into the tea garden life as well.
Tea cultivation in the North Bengal had started off about 120 to 150 years ago in Dooars region. In the year 1856 tea was planted in Darjeeling district and its surrounding area in North Bengal.
North Bengal has about 450 tea gardens spread out in the Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region that are registered as sellers in the Siliguri Tea Auction Centre. Tea cultivation in the North Bengal had started off about 120 to 150 years ago in Dooars region. In the year 1856 tea was planted in Darjeeling district and its surrounding area in North Bengal. Small tea growers are largely concentrated in North Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and at the foothills of Darjeeling hills.
There are 30,000 such small tea growers in North Bengal and total production is around 91 million kg, which is almost 32.5% of North Bengal's tea production of 280 million kg.
Bought-leaf factories are units that buy these tea leaves and convert them into the processed tea. Generally, 6000 tea bushes can be planted in an acre of plot. These 6,000 bushes can produce 10,000 kg of green leaf.
